Ann Christin Kornelsen

Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin

Involved in research within the MOOSland Project, which deals with peat moss paludiculture as a sustainable agricultural use of drained peatland soils.

Ann Christin Kornelsen has been working at the Institute of Geography in Osnabrück since April 2024. She is involved in research within the MOOSland Project, which deals with peat moss paludiculture as a sustainable agricultural use of drained peatland soils.

Ann Christin Kornelsen studied Physical Geography and Landscape Sciences, with a focus on hydrology and soil science, at Leibniz University of Hanover.

As a research assistant at the Niedersächsisches Landesamt für Bergbau, Energie und Geologie (LBEG), Department of Agriculture and Soil Monitoring, she was involved in the SWAMPS Project, which investigated methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on agricultural used peatlands in Lower Saxony. Her work included the design and implementation of the field trial, hydrological modelling and the development of future scenarios.

After the end of the SWAMPS project, she went to the European Competence Centre for Mires and Climate gGmbH, where she took over the role of scientific director. Also, as project manager of the ReviMoor project in the field of research, she was involved in stakeholder management and networked research on peatlands.

Since 2022, Ann Christin is the founder and scientific director of the Mission to Marsh gGmbH, a leading non-profit organization, specializing in wetland conservation and education on sustainability. She is passionate about bridging the gap between the scientific community and the general public in order to highlight the importance of healthy peatlands for the environment and for climate protection.

As a renowned peatland scientist, Ann Christin has already researched the state of the world’s peatlands as part of a 9-month research expedition on the North-, Central- and South American continent from the boreal peatlands in Canada to the untouched mires in Tiera del Fuego, Patagonia. In addition to taking water samples, her work focused on interviewing experts and scientists in order to highlight the condition of the wetlands and the changes they have undergone.
